What do you do when you feel bored?
I don’t necessarily just mean bored on a rainy weekend when nothing on Netflix catches your interest. I mean bored with your job, bored with your hobbies, bored with your routine of wake-work-sleep-repeat?
Life has been good lately — better than good, great. I’ve been walking around with a goofy grin on my face and feeling happier than I have in a long time.
But even so, sometimes working in the same pattern, the same monotonous hum of the daily grind, can wear me down. It’s not helpful when you don’t feel inspired by the work you do, even if you greatly respect the people you work with and the company in general. But I need inspiration in my daily life. I need to feel like I’m actually contributing something, not just staring at a screen and zoning out. I sometimes wonder if anyone would even notice if I didn’t do anything all day — it’s scary to think they probably wouldn’t.
Laziness breeds laziness, so I know I need to get my act together. The sun is shining and life is good — I just need to figure out my longer-term goals and how to get there. By 27, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, and Amy Winehouse had all reached the peak of their careers — and died. I’m just getting started and still not sure where I’m going. But whatever (wherever?) it is, I hope it gives me a spark, a start, something that fulfils me and helps others in some small way — otherwise, what’s the point?
